Hitcher

It’s damned kind of you to give me a lift, mate. Damned kind. See, I’m not really a hitch-hiker, got my car stolen by one as a matter of fact. I don’t usually pick up hitch-hikers. It’s not that I’m not a kind, friendly philanthropic kinda guy, it’s just not my thing. I mean, normally when I’m driving I’m sort of in a bit of a hurry, I don’t have time to sit around talking to some kid on his way to whatever part of the county he’s going to, now do I? And, well, you hear stories don’t you? That and that song, how’s it go, “there’s a killer on the road”… hah,

Y’know, I still don’t know why I stopped and picked him up. The hitcher I mean. It’s not as though he had a trust-worthy face or something like that. Hell, I don’t even remember what he looked like, in fact, I don’t remember him ever taking his hood off. Had one of those hooded sweatshirt things on. Y’know, those things all the kids seem to be wearing these days? One of them.

Anyway, I… I don’t really remember stopping the car. He told me some cock and bull story about somebody pinching his lift, y’know, starts going on about my car looking familiar. I remember looking in the rear-view mirror, though. I remember that. I saw my reflection, then his silhouette, right. Funny thing was, he had these eyes. Bright red and glowing they were, like something out of an old movie. Would’ve been kinda hokey in a movie, but in the back seat of my car, in the middle of the night… got me spooked I suppose.

Suddenly this guy starts shouting that this is his car and accusing me of all kinds of stuff, I mean, I ask you! I told him I bought this car fair and square off a dealer back home, but he won’t hear it. He just went wild. Next thing I know I’ve woken up lying here on the kerb, all cut up. Not cut up bad, mind, just enough to shake me up, y’know? I don’t know what happened to my car. Funny thing, he must’ve taken my wallet out of the glove compartment, stuck it in my hand, I’ve got the wallet. Just not the car.

Anyhow, damned kind of you picking me up like this. I was a bit stuck back there. Say now, there’s a funny thing, your car looks awfully familiar. Now where could I have seen this….?
